The Atragene Group
Includes the alpina, chiisinensis, koreana and macropetala groups. Characteristics; Nodding, lantern or bell–shaped flowers, spring flowering on the growth of the previous year, tolerant of cold temperatures, sun/ part shade, to 10 feet.

The Herbaceous and Non-Clinging Shrubs A fine choice and valuable addition to the perennial border. The Large-Flowered Group - Early and Late Flowering The Early Large-flowering cultivars bloom in late spring /early summer on wood ripened from the previous season. A light pruning after the first period of flowering will encourage another round of flowering later in the summer to early autumn. Some varieties will produce flowers almost continuously throughout the summer. The Late Large-flowering cultivars produce their flowers from early summer to Autumn. In warmer zones the flowering will begin in early summer and in colder climate mid-summer. Many will re-bloom if given a light pruning and fertilizing after they flower. These are pruned hard in early spring producing flowers on the new growth.

‘Belle of Woking’ – Early Large-flowered Group (1881) – Rosette shaped, double, 6- in. , silvery mauve flowers. Blooms strongest in late spring through early summer and lightly later in the summer. This is an old classic but a somewhat difficult plant. Many report this to be a weak grower and shy to flower but others have grown it with more success particularly in the warmer regions with longer growing seasons. Texensis-Viorna Group

These varieties produce flowers of extraordinary beauty. The flower form varies from pitcher, urn or tulip shaped. They flower from mid-summer to fall and are hard pruned. As a group the texensis hybrids are quite heat tolerant but some are prone to mildew. Take early pre-caution by spraying with a fungicide monthly from early summer.
